Happy Days are Here Again!! President Rob Rosa is back from sunny Florida and reenergized. He rang the big bell at noon, then led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and the Four-way Test. Sue Klock used “Prayer for the Trees” as today’s invocation, reminding us of The Rotary Foundation’s seventh area of focus, the environment.

Rob introduced two guests, Tyeisha Saffold and Kimberly Robinson, from the East Hartford Family Shelter. Then invited them to lead the parade to the back table to have lunch. Guy LaBella had again arranged a meal from Anna’s including a combo and a cheese pizza, tuna and eggplant grinders, and salad contributed by Diana Hossain. Charlie Schein agreed to sell raffle tickets during lunch.

The meeting resumed at 12:38.

Rob explained we would be relieved from “bookplate duty” so our guests would have an opportunity to speak with us about the East Hartford Family Shelter. Tyeisha is the program manager, Kimberly the case manager. It is clear these women are devoted to the shelter and providing for their residents. It is also clear that the shelter can use help from our club. Rob asked everyone to spend time during the next few weeks thinking how best to help. This is definitely a community service project everyone can get behind!

Rob followed this with our much-missed trivia contest. Sue & Peter couldn’t resist beating the others answering the year Paul Harris dies (1947) and the year the first Rotary Club was founded (1905). Guy LaBella rounded out this week’s contest providing Rotary’s motto, “Service Above Self.” Some of these overachievers may want to sit on their hands and allow others to have a chance to get something from Rob’s trivia grab bag.

Jim Watts, longtime chair of the Paul Harris Recognition event, reminded everyone he’s returned from his month-long idyll in the Greek Islands and ready to do Rotary work. Here’s his message: The Paull Harris nominating committee is now accepting your recommendations for this year’s Paul Harris Recognition. We will be holding our committee meeting on Wednesday, December 4 th , at 11 AM before our regular club meeting at Goodwin University. Email your recommendations to Jim via email (jimw@jwatts.com.

Another longtime veteran of Rotary’s fall/ winter service projects, Jack Sayre, reminded us that Salvation Army bell ringing at Cabella’s is fast approaching. We will be doing this three Saturdays in December. He has the first Saturday covered but will be looking for more of us to volunteer for the other two Saturdays.

There will be no club meeting on Wednesday, November 27 th .

That’s it for High Gear this month. Substituting for “where in the world is Bob Buettner” Sue Klock.
