The penultimate meeting of his presidency was marked by a cloudy day with the rain holding off long enough for President Kevin to team up with in-coming President Bob Buettner on the grill outside the front door. The result was that both the hot dogs and Kevin’s presidency were well-cooked!

Today turned out to be a busy meeting albeit with a small crowd of Rotarians. We were joined by four Rotary scholarship winners along with a proud mom, a proud gramma, and a most proud dad. And Gazette Editor and Paul Harris recipient Bill Doak was here in one of his rare public appearances on publishing day. And the gracious Mrs. Cunningham, Rosemary Hogan, graced our gathering as well.

The buffet consisted of the hot dogs, some burgers, some chicken, a miniscule bag of potato chips and some salad. Ned got to hand out DQ’s Dilly bars for a nice change thanks to Kevin’s generosity. None of the drinks were of the no-sugar variety so many of us were consigned to consuming a bottle of water.  Thanks to Kevin, Bob and handy sidekick, Jack Sayre for putting the meal together.

Our guests appeared a little non-plussed by our singing, but we were undeterred. Art and George lead the effort such as it was. Our six scholarship winners are headed to Purdue, Roger Williams, Florida International, St. Josephs, Cornell and UConn respectively.

Steve Jacoby was here and surprisingly spy after his valve replacement and he thanked one and all for the Club support. Bill Saunders is at home and doing well. Dick McCarthy was here and related that he can see clearly now after his cataract surgery.

PP, PDG Sue Klock briefly reported on the Rotary International Convention in Germany she and Peter recently attended, stressing the inspirational value of the conference with the change to meet Rotarians from all over the world. Next year’s convocation will be in Hawaii.

Bob Buettner related his recent attendance at a Manchester Club meeting where we donated a check for $1,000 to Rick Lawrence’s Water Project. In the course of 15 years, this project has grown from five local clubs to more than 50 Clubs across the region and beyond. Five more villages accounting for almost 8,000 people are scheduled to be given the gift of clean water this year.

The District Installation Dinner is Thursday night and Ceil reports all signups for our local Dinner next Wednesday are due in by tomorrow, Friday, evening.

The Sgt. At Arms report was given by Dick McCarthy and contained the usual whining about the Sox, thanks from Kevin for his “good year” – not sure he needed a tire or was referencing his term as president. Lots of folks were happy Steve was back and that Bill has come through his rotator cuff surgery in fine fettle. And lastly Ned Lynch bragged once again about his son who was all-state in both academics and athletics. Worth bragging about.

Bob Buettner won the raffle yet again, and Peter Klock took home the flowers yet again.

With all the work done by Neal Cunningham, Wes Willett and Bill Saunders, Dan Larson stepped in at the last minute to run the Non-Duck Race Raffle. After some confusion due to one of our drawers of the tickets placing two tickets in a winning envelope, we were able to establish that our winners were as follows:

·       Fourth Place - $400 – Gene Kickery – a relative of you know who.

·       Third Place - $600 – Alan Colette – one of Neal’s golf buddies.

·       Second Place - $1000 gift certificate Andersen’s Jewelers – Nate Quesnel

·       First Place – Larry Hangland.

Neal reported that we raised around $6,500 for our club projects and thanked everyone who participated.

We that Kevin rung the bell for the next to the last time and we scattered into the afternoon.
