Someone must have forgotten to turn up the volume on the “All Clear” announcement today since so many of our members appear to be still lounging in their hurricane bunkers, awaiting the passing of Hurricane Hermine. It’s okay, folks, you can come out now.
We barely used four tables today which put us in the low twenties for attendance. Let’s hope we get a better turnout for our guest next week, UConn Hockey Head Coach Mike Cavanaugh.
Singing for his cake
President Elect Susan Hansen stood in today for the traveling man, Bill Saunders, who is strutting his walking stick down Las Ramblas in Barcelona this week.
Well organized as always, Susan rang the bell promptly and introduced Jennifer Odorczyk, a perspective member from the YMCA and pinch hitter for Michael Kerrigan, to give the Invocation. Jennifer told the story of a young lad participating in the YMCA Day Camp whose mother was out of the funds needed to continue his attendance at the camp. Thanks to the generosity of many folks including most especially East Hartford Rotarians, sufficient funds were found to keep the young man in good standing. This is another small example of Rotary Serving Humanity, this year’s theme.
Lunch today was a buffet of potatoes, carrots, roasted pork, bread and salad in that order. Dessert was a variety of cake slices. No one left hungry.
Our only guests were Jennifer and our speaker, Susan Baroni-Schaeffer from Channel 3’ Kid’s Camp. Susan asked for volunteers to lead the Welcome Song and The Empress and Kevin Kickery immediately stood up. Of course, Kevin was only trying to get a piece of cake but volunteering is volunteering.

Dan Firestone began his stint as Sergeant At Arms today and reported that his first session was “not too bad.” Mary Martin paid for her “29th Birthday”, Dan himself paid for a visit to his grandsons in Boston who are all now taller than him, Jay Stewart coughed up to recognize the good news that Betty Russell is feeling well enough to join the Rotary Ladies that Lunch this month, Wes Willett paid for his unknown First Anniversary in the Club, Marc Glass wanted to recognize the upcoming start of the NFL season, and Steve Jacoby paid generously because Jackie has put up with 35 years of late meals.
Just a few announcements today.
There is a scholarship reception at Goodwin College tomorrow to award the “Finish Line Fund” scholarship to a deserving student.
George Schoen noted that the number of golfers is down to about 92 this year with room for more. Raffle prizes are also much needed. Less than two weeks left so if you haven’t done your share, now is officially “the last minute.”
Jim Watts reminded us that the Paul Harris nomination process is coming up in late October. Nomination forms can be found on our website.
Peter Klock reported that a Shelter Box has been set up at a major insurance company’s office in Farmington. Any who use the conference room are required to make a contribution to the Fund.
Marc Glass reminded us of the meeting next Thursday at Savvi’s Restaurant at 6 p.m. for the Satellite Club. It’s a makeup for members so come to the session and bring a non-member who might be interested.
Doug Willett solicited Hosts and Leaders for our annual Fireside Chats to be held the week of October 10. More to come.
Bob Wood won the raffle today due to the absence of Ned Lynch.
Channel 3's Kids Camp
Our speaker today was Susan Baroni-Schaeffer, the Corporate Relations Manager of Channel 3’s Kids Camp. The Camp was established in 1906 by the old Hartford Times newspaper and was taken over by Channel 3 in 1976.
The Camp serves children between the ages of 8 to 15 in a variety of summer programs which include over-night camps, day camps, military family week, autism camp week, and others. The kids enjoy a wide range of activities including archery, swimming, athletics, campouts and nature studies.
The Camp is comprised of 25 buildings and is located on 150 acres bordering the Skunkamaug River in Andover and Coventry. While the summer camps serve the majority of their clients, the Camp runs other programs year round including after school and weekend programs. Over 2,000 kids from 96 Connecticut towns participate in the Camps. One of the winter highlights of the Camp program is a Holiday Light Fantasia which is held in Goodwin Park in Hartford each year from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day. All in all, a very worthy endeavor and an interesting presentation.
Okay, after eight straight weeks you are probably getting tired of my musings. (Except for Ruthie - Ruthie never gets tired of my musings.) So next week either Anwar takes over High Gear or we strong arm a worthy substitute.
