President Rob rang the bell at noon and led the club in the Pledge of Allegiance and The Four-Way Test.

Anwar introduced today’s invocation by saying: “Some say that humor is the spice of life. So, allow me to add a little humor in this invocation,”

As we gather here today, let’s remember the wise words of Mark Twain: “The secret of getting ahead is getting started.” So, let’s get started but after we nourish our bodies with lunch. [Laughter around the room.]

May our discussions be as productive as a bee in a hive. May our ideas be as bright as a Fourth of July firework, and our laughter as hearty as a Thanksgiving feast.

Let’s embrace the spirit of Rotary with the enthusiasm of a kid on Christmas morning and the determination of someone trying to assemble IKEA furniture without the instructions.

And if all else fails, may we at least leave here today with a renewed appreciation for the power of teamwork, the joy of community service, and the undeniable magic of a little humor.

Thanks to Anwar who delivers the club meeting invocation the first Wednesday of every month!

Rob introduced our guest, Paul C. Wilusz, whom he met at a recent Farmers’ Market and invited to join us for lunch.

The trivia contest ensued with a Labor Day theme.  Winners were Sue, Marc and Guy.

Since lunch was ready -- catered by Anna’s, coordinated thanks to Guy LaBella and laid out by Ceil and Guy -- Rob invited our guest to lead the parade.  Today’s lunch was a garden salad, Buffalo chicken wings, cheese pizza and a combo pizza, and three grinder offerings (eggplant parmesan, tuna salad and pastrami), plus generous additions – another Diana Hossain salad and a Ceil Collins bundt cake.
During lunch, lucky new member, John Forrest had an opportunity to circulate among diners selling raffle tickets.  Thanks John!

Following lunch, Rob reminded us of an upcoming event—the seniors lunch “picnic” here at Goodwin—and invited Dan Firestone to fill us in on RIM developments.  Dan reminded us that this will be more than a long bike ride.  There will be opportunities to walk and even to ride in a rickshaw.   Our club will be handing out water to riders if they make it to Cabela’s.  Bob Buettner oversees that.  Contact Bob to volunteer.  We hope to have a table with Rotary paraphernalia there.  Neal Cunningham oversees the October 19th water station, during the Hartford Marathon.  Neal will have a signup sheet available at future meetings.  Lastly, the town’s Halloween Happening this year is scheduled for October 25th from 12:30 to 3 PM.  Rain date is the next day from 1 to 3 PM.  Stay tuned for more details in October.

Our guest Paul Wilusz was invited by President Rob to tell us something about himself and his multifaceted career.  He’s been, among many other things, an educator and an author, recently specializing in books on financial literacy and books for children.

Caring Moments
  • Rob’s wife’s biopsy results were happily benign.
  • Ruth Sheehan is undergoing radiation.

Neal Cunningham held the winning raffle ticket.  George mentioned the pot has grown to $145.  Unfortunately, Neal drew an Ace but not THE ACE.

Rob told us he’s decided to extend the lunchapalooza competition through the month of September.  So bring on your lunch guests.  Meetings are fun!!

Rob rang the bell to close the meeting at 1:04 PM.

President Rob rang the bell at noon. Rob invited us to observe a moment of silence in memory of all those who lost their lives because of the 9/11 terrorist attacks then led the club in the Pledge of Allegiance and The Four-Way Test.

Ceil Collins provided a thoughtful Rotary-themed invocation emphasizing patience, understanding and humility.

Anwar introduced our guest, Anita Barbero, who will be the speaker today.

The trivia contest ensued with a September theme, everything from the Latin word, Septem, to two types of moon this month (who knew there would be a corn moon), and the European explorer who first navigated the river which borders west-side Manhattan. Winners were Marc, Anwar and Sue.

Since lunch was ready -- catered by Anna’s, coordinated thanks to Guy LaBella and laid out by Ceil and Guy -- Rob invited our guest to lead the parade. Today’s lunch was a garden salad, a combo pizza, and three grinder offerings (eggplant parmesan, tuna salad and pastrami), plus another very welcome Diana Hossain salad.

Following lunch, Rob reminded us of an upcoming event—the seniors lunch “picnic” here at Goodwin—and invited Dan Firestone to fill us in on RIM developments. Our club will be handing out water to riders if they make it to Cabela’s. Bob Buettner oversees that. We hope to have a table with Rotary paraphernalia there. Neal Cunningham will oversee the October 19th water station, during the Hartford Marathon and should have a signup sheet available at future meetings. The town’s Halloween Happening this year is scheduled for October 25th from 12:30 to 3 PM. The October 23rd club meeting will be devoted to sorting candy into small Ziploc bags which will be distributed by club members on the 25th. And, looking far into the future, our Holiday Party will be on Wednesday evening, December 18th at the Wethersfield Country Club.

Anwar introduced our speaker, Anita Barbero, who is a mindfulness coach. In a relatively short amount of time, she calmed us down by recommending we take a few moments being quiet and breathing deeply. It’s a wonder we weren’t all taking a post-prandial nap. Luckily, she was lively enough to keep everyone’s attention.

Caring Moments

  • It was great to welcome Chuck Clarke back with us.
  • Guy LaBella mentioned with sadness the passing of Tony Reali at age 65.
  • Guy also mentioned seeing Betty Russell recently, who is still active at age 100.
  • Jack mentioned that Heb Tischofer is going to try using a magnifying glass to regain some use of one of his eyes after his recent fall and eye injury.

Rob rang the bell to close the meeting soon after 1 PM.
