August is marching inexorably on. The evenings will be getting cooler shortly and football will soon be underway. Maybe the college and pro football seasons will be a balm to the intense disappointment being internalized by the Bean Towner faithful. You can expect to hear “wait ‘till next year!” anytime now. Of course, south of us, they’ll be looking to picking up the phone after 28 rings come the end of October.

Proud Pig Provides Polio Progress

Today’s group was close to the new normal, with about 21 Rotarians (22 when Steve Jacoby rolled in at 12:32 p.m.) and one guest, Awet Tsegai, who works in the legislature over in Hartford and is running for a seat on the town council. He is good looking and personable and a Democrat to boot, which doesn’t hurt in this town. Hopefully he is wise enough to ignore any campaign advice proffered by the Republicans sitting all around him.

After another thoughtful Anwar invocation, we dined on roast chicken, carrots, string beans and salad with a cookie plate to finish. President Bob proclaimed that “the pig is back today” but unfortunately it was ceramic and not conducive to culinary use. Rotary International reports that there has not been a reported case of polio in the world for two years running. We can be proud of our contribution to that.

Glass Invests Insurance Premiums

On the announcement front, President Bob related the following:

·      8/24 Saturday – the Polio Plus Yard Goats game – doors open at 4:10 p.m. – game at 6:00 p.m.

·      8/26 Monday – Food Share in Bloomfield 12:30 p.m. Contact Anwar.

·      9/7 Saturday – Habitat for Humanity – East Hartford Project

·      10/13 Sunday – Bike Race – Water Station at Wickham Park

·      Golf – 72 golfers – need raffle prizes, sponsors, gift certificates, etc. John Larson’s coffers are pledging $2,500 toward our effort as a major sponsor.

Marc Glass was presented a pin to recognize his Paul Harris Plus Seven status. Great job, Mark.

55 Years of Marital Bliss!

Sgt. At Arms Jim Watts reported a good day highlighted by Bob and Sandie Buettner’s 55th year wedding anniversary. Sandie has an express lane to heaven. The report was also highlighted by Frank Collins logging 49 years in Rotary. Many of us assumed he was at the table in Chicago when Rotary was founded. And with what turned into a highlight, Jack Sayre got up to brag on his granddaughter who, according to Jack, has an hour-long comedy special on Amazon Prime called “My mother’s human and so am I.” Check out Alice Wetterlenz. (Okay, I did check it out. No Alice, no mother on Amazon Prime. Maybe Jack is experiencing a little premature adulation?)   Sue Klock informed us that Peter came through cataract surgery in fine fashion. So anyone could see clearly that that was good news.

Laura Floyd won the raffle and Dan Firestone took home the flowers this week.

No speaker, early ringing of the bell…

One week to go…
