Volume 74 Issue 12, September 16, 2020

Social time before the formal meeting was quite lively. We learned that the food at the Village where several of our members have moved recently is particularly good. Jack and Bill indicated that they might be leaving the meeting momentarily to get their lunches from the dining room. Watch your calories, folks. Laura introduced her granddaughter who sat through the meeting quietly.  It was nice to see Dan Firestone, who is recuperating at home, but dizziness issue has not gone away.

President Bob Doubles Up
The bell rang on time reminding us to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. We had a good view of the giant US flag behind President Bob who also did the double duty of delivering the invocation, asking for divine help and forgiveness.
Listen Up! This Week's Announcements
ANNOUNCEMENTS:

  1. Rotary in Motion (RIM) will take place on October 3, 2020. Rotary will set up the water station at Wickham Park. Social distancing and other Covid-19 protocols will be observed. Volunteers are needed and welcome.

  1. Liberty Bank will have a zoom meeting on September 22 to discuss Thanksgiving Fund Raising. Our club will participate similar to what we did last year. It is a win-win situation.

  1. The East Hartford Senior Center will have a soft opening in December 2020. Our club will be recognized for our donation with a plaque/sign in the building.

  1. The Golf Committee reported that so far there are 17 foursomes signed up. Goodwin will not have a team at the golf tournament due to scheduling issues. However, Ray might be able to attend on his own.
George will try to put together another foursome. Dan Larson provided George names of his group. He also took the responsibility of getting the beverages, water, and Dunkin sign. Since there are eighteen signs, three sponsor signs will be installed at every third hole. President Bob will bring ice and tickets. Bill will take care of crackers. Ruth, along with Peggy, will take care of the registration table and 50-50 Raffle. Goodie bags will be provided for the participants. Several members of the Golf Committee will meet at MCC on Sunday before the tournament at 5:00 pm for preparation.

Human Trafficking a Serious Problem in USA
Anwar introduced Dave Tedeschi, past president of the Newington Rotary Club and Assistant Governor for Area 9 District 7890. He spoke about the second fastest growing crime in the world – Human Trafficking. It is present in our own state, CT, our own country, USA, and the rest of the world. Every thirty seconds a child/person becomes a victim.

He painted a heartbreaking picture of how the victims are lured and used for financial gains. His club has taken several initiatives to curtail this in CT and is working with the national organization. He made us aware of signs of abuse in victims and encouraged us to say something if we see something that fits the profile.

Until next Wednesday, your scribe, Anwar Hossain
