Our gathering began with a bang! Literally. Guy LaBella’s efforts to inflate a tire on the wagon carrying dictionaries to the meeting resulted in the tire’s blowing, bringing folks from all through the building running to Room 109!
Our Immediate Past President, Bob Buettner, did his best to capture everyone’s attention by ringing the club bell at noon. His valiant effort was only somewhat successful. He led us in the pledge and invited Jack Sayre to provide the invocation. Apparently, the lunch at the back of the room enticed a few eager eaters to ignore our opening rituals and skip right to the main course. The good news is that Bob’s experience leading this group enabled him to quickly restore order. Jack proceeded to provide an inspirational message emphasizing Rotary’s focus on service.
Though Bob intended to provide reports on various service projects occurring this fall, he lost the battle with the eager eaters and invited everyone to continue with lunch. Once again, thanks to Guy LaBella for arranging lunch and Ceil for helping with setup. Charlie Schein agreed to sell raffle tickets during lunch.
To add to the general ______ of the day, Sue chose this time to explain how we would be adding the bookplates to dictionaries and thesauruses after lunch. At Bob’s suggestion, each person was given a box to start the process as well as a pack of bookplates.
After lunch, Bob did manage to have various members provide reports on last weekend’s candy distribution. Thanks to Bob, Ceil, Neal, Anwar and Ray Maselek (along with his granddaughter), this was very successful.
Bob reminded everyone that in lieu of our regular meeting, next Wednesday will be our club’s annual BBQ for veterans at the Senior Center. Those who plan to help serve should be at the senior center at 11:30 AM.
Ceil mentioned that the Holiday Party is scheduled for December 18th at the Wethersfield Country Club. Price remains $55/person.
At this point, individual members began to unpack the books and add the bookplates to the dictionaries. Before too long, Jack Sayre pointed out that the bookplates were defective -- even if the back could be peeled away, the bookplates would not stick to the books. Very embarrassing for Sue who had not thought to check to ensure they were the same type we have used in the past. Everyone began to repack the books sans bookplates. Hopefully the project will proceed smoothly soon.
Peter won the raffle but failed to pick the Queen; so, the winnings continue to grow.
