HIGH
Spring has sprung. May be! Officially we are still a few days away from the beginning of Spring, 2016. Mild temperatures under sunny sky made us pause and not rush from our cars to the meeting. The bell was rung and the Rotary Song was sung as we do every week. If there was any subtle change, my auditory receptors did not pick it up. The Pledge-of-Allegiance offers the opportunity to not only say the words but reflect how fortunate we are living in this country. The theme of the invocation by Susan Hansen was inclusiveness and recognition of diversity among ourselves.
The buffet style lunch to celebrate St. Patrick's Day included naturally cured corn beef, without the tint, roasted potatoes, cabbage with mixed vegetables, bread rolls and salads. Desert, following the day's theme, was cupcakes with a touch of green. How many of you almost swallowed the plastic shamrock cake decoration?
There were no guests today, but President Marc joined President Elect Bill to sing to Christine Lessard, who ceases to be a guest starting next week, when she joins us as an official member of the East Hartford Rotary Club. What did you think about the "Singing Presidents"? I thought so.
President Marc, this week, did not forget to call upon Happy Jack for the weekly Raffle. Last week's winner, Frank Collins, pulled #403 making Neil Cunningham the winner. Oh, but wait a second. What happened to the Sergeant-at-Arms report?. George Schoen however, overlooked the omission and graciously approached the podium for his report. Business was good today.
There were numerous and some very generous contributions in honor of St. Patrick's Day.
- An unusual one from Dan Firestone being inducted into the "Nut Behind the Wheel" club with the only other well know member being Jimmy Johnson. For details call or email Dan. It is an interesting story.
- Larry Hangland and Ned Lynch for birthdays.
- Sue Klock for Marc and Bill attending P.E.T.S. and winning a Gold Star, did I get that right?
- Rotary Anniversaries for Anwar and Jay. How time flies.
Announcements and Reports:
- Paul Harris Dinner on April 13, 2016
- District Conference on April 29, 2016
- Mystery Ride on May 7, 2016
- Ceil Collins reported EHHS students raising funds for a fellow autistic student.
President Marc had mentioned to me earlier that when I write the High Gear, I should accurately represent the content of the presentation by the guest speaker today. Per his instruction, when I went home I asked myself "what did you talk about?'. I responded "Galapagos".
