Dog days of summer did nothing to discourage many of our club members from attending  today’s noon meeting, enjoying this chance to gather for some lessening of the noise in the room, fun and fellowship.

The No Guest Welcome Song - One of Our Best!

Following President Dave’s ringing the bell, George Schoen’s invocation encouraged us to live up to Rotary’s core beliefs, including serving, caring and sharing with others.  He referred to this as “life service as well as lip service.”  Immediately following that inspiring message, everyone lined up to share a savory meal highlighted by chicken marsala, accompanied by a rice and vegetable mixture, and steamed Brussel sprouts. Alongside these warm dishes we enjoyed a tossed green salad with optional Italian and Ranch dressing.  Generously sized slices of carrot cake and an assortment of cookies were dessert.

Though we had no guests today President Dave invited George Schoen to lead us all in the Welcome Song.

Neal Cunningham reported a slow day for fines.  Ned Lynch did his part contributing several dollars to  celebrate his son Brian, a new golfer, having a hole-in-one, and in today’s standings, Red Sox are #1 and Yankees #3.  Doug Willett contributed, mentioning he’s celebrating his grandson’s 10th birthday.

Caring moments:  Marc Glass shared he had a nice conversation with Larry Frazier who will be joining us for our golf tournament on September 18th.  Larry Hangland reported that his 17 year-old grandson, who was in the Children’s Hospital at Hartford Hospital after suffering damage to his kidney during a football camp, is now definitely on the mend.  Larry had high praise for the hospital.

President Dave also mentioned that Rotary International President-elect Sam Owori passed away unexpectedly due to complications from surgery.

Golf Planning Gathers Momentum

Golf committee co-chair George Schoen announced that there will be a golf committee meeting two weeks from today, August 2nd, at 11:30, here at the Ridge. He mentioned that copies of registration form for the club’s golf tournament on September 18th, are available in the lobby and will be here in coming weeks.  The sponsor opportunity letters will be available at our August 2nd meeting.  George reminded us that we need auction items for the tournament. Marc Glass is ready to receive items for the auction; drop these off at his office at 17 Silver Lane, across from Town Fair Tire, or arrange to give him items at a regular club meeting.

The District Golf Tournament is August 7th.  Applications are available on the district website, www.rotarydistrict7890.org .

This year our summer picnic, where members and spouses/partners are all welcome, will be at Kevin and Sue Kickery’s home, 38 Bancroft Road in East Hartford on August 9th.  Any problem finding the house, call Kevin at home 860-569-8184.  Social committee reminds everyone helping hands are needed the day before that picnic, up at the Ridge, to help load tables and chairs for transport to the Kickery home.  Help will also be needed returning these to the Ridge at the end of the picnic.

There will be no noon meeting next week.  Our annual joint meeting with Glastonbury will occur this Monday, July 24th at the Elks Club in Glastonbury.  For those who have not been to their summer picnic site, the address is 98 Woodland St, South Glastonbury, CT 06073.  The cost for dinner is $20, which will most likely be the prime rib dinner we always enjoy.  Drinks and fellowship begin at 6 PM, dinner will be served at 7 PM.  There will be a board meeting at that location beginning at 5 PM.

Our meeting concluded with Bob Wood’s  selecting the winning raffle ticket, which was held by Frank Collins.

Stay cool and hydrated in this heat. Until next week in Glastonbury,

Sue Klock
