Another Beautiful August Day
Still another beautiful summer day welcomed us to the Ridge this noon. The low eighty’s temperature and low humidity made for a perfect combination. Lots of activity was going on, with the Golf Committee hard at work in the buffet room and early arrivers filling up ice tea glasses and engaging in spirited conversations as we awaited the bell. We were a goodly crowd today, filling up the five allotted tables.
My Kingdom For a Dessert
President Bill rang the bell promptly as is his wont. Mary Martin offered the Invocation and we immediately stood up to go to the buffet line when we were told to sit down, as the meal was served at the tables today. With only one server carrying three plates at a time, the first table was at the dessert table before the last table had access to their baby carrots, potatoes, chicken and roll. By the time the last table was ready for their slice of cake, they had all been consumed. Not the first time this caterer has misjudged the amount of desserts needed to satisfy our sweet teeth!
Our lone guest today was Alice Clement from the Hockanum River Boy Scouts Council. Alex Wisz and Sue Klock conducted the Welcome Song in her honor.
The Fertile Offspring of D.L.
Dave Amberg did the honors as Sergeant At Arms once again. Bob Buettner paid to welcome Chickie Amberg back home for some reason; Neal Cunningham lacked a pin as did Susan Hansen. Hope Firestone and Alex Wisz planned to leave early; Kevin Kickery paid to acknowledge his son’s 30th birthday; Dan Larson bragged about three, count ‘em, three grandchildren in the works; Ned Lynch did his weekly shout out to his Red Sox and recognized his son’s finishing Air Assault Training; President Bill noted the quality of his new Board of Directors; and Doug Willett remembered his late boss, Jay Fishman, Chairman and CEO of The Travelers “who was a great boss and even better man.”
Board Doings
In the Announcements Department, President Bill reported on the following from the Monday BOD Meeting:
- We have 59 Active and 6 Honorary Members and our latest attendance is a paltry 52%.
- The Board voted to make Gil Wishart an Honorary Member.
- Ongoing work on setting up the Satellite Memberships, the Corporate Memberships and making the appropriate by-law changes to make it all copacetic. The Satellite Club will be introduced at an evening meeting at Savvis on Main Street September 15th. The goal is to attract new members to the Satellite Club which will meet two Thursdays each month
- Treasurer Mary Martin reports that our account balances as of 7/30 are Operations - $6,863, Charitable Fund - $10,708, Golf - $4934, Spring Duck Race - $13,943, and Savings - $9,411. We are doing well.
- The Board approved a Charitable Budget of $65,000
- There are still a number of members who have not paid their dues. Names will be published here next week.
- A new Club Brochure will be available In a couple of weeks, thanks to Susan Hansen and Larry Hangland.
- We will be funding a lunch for town seniors in December. This will be a hands-on event.
- The Board agreed to subsidize 50% of new members (last two years) attendance at the District Foundation Dinner in November.
- This Friday at 10:30 a.m. will be the Memorial Service for long time member Tony Picano at Our Lady of Peace Church in town.
- Golf Committee needs raffle prizes and will meet again two weeks from today.
Ned Lynch won the raffle once again. No program or speaker today.
That’s it for this session. Next week our speaker is Kevin Liner, President Bill’s grandson who will relate his experiences in his recent visit to Rwanda. It should be an interesting presentation.
