Today this writer spent the better part of 35 minutes participating in a Foundation Committee meeting at the far corner of the gathering room. This did not allow the opportunity to mingle as much and gather good stuff on the discussions taking place.
A few moments before the bell rung I was working a few Rotarians for their thoughts on anything that interested them. Jim Fallon sported a white beanie that hid his surgery on some moles. We hope this heals well and he gets back to his shiny head at future meetings. Jay Stewart and Dan Larson were complementing each other with their purple sweater/shirt. They make a nice couple.
The Martin couple A/K/A Happy Jack and Empress Mary, attempted to match each other too but their purple adornment was more subtle. Spoke to Jim Watts and he had a 5 X 7 card ready for the invocation. Too bad he had the wrong date for his turn. New member Jennifer Ordonez did a fine job filling in for Michael Kerrigan. Song and respect for the flag were bellowed by the gathering and we moved to lunch.
Another fine showing of carrots, lasagna, extra sauce, garlic knots and salad complimented with a desert of apple crisp with vanilla ice cream. I was one of the last people to get in line as Nick Cecere informed me you get better stuff if you wait. That is a man with experience so I followed him to the buffet table and will admit he was right. You also don’t feel bad taking extra if no one is in back of you. Doug Willett passed me by with a plate so full his cheese was dripping off. Is his wife back in Florida so he’s cooking for one?
The welcome song took place without the traditional dance contest. Perhaps the participants were still eating the fine fare provided today. But, there is nothing better than having Art Bradbury lead us off. I wish I had his chops.
Bob Buettner took the microphone to share the take from the Sargeant of Arms. He had a reasonable take as the Yankee fans showed up with some biting comments. One word to the people who shout back in support of their dear Red Sox, pay a $1 and you’ll get noted in the High Gear, only if I’m not the author. I’m also trying to read the notes of other collections but I can’t read Bob’s writing. Buettner, Schoen, S. O’Connor, Willett, Kloc and J. O’Connor contributed for reasons that will be forever sealed in scribble.
