By the time you read this we will be in the middle of the first “Snowmageddon” of 2017.  Well, not Doug Willett and the rest of the snow birds, but us true Nutmeggers will be.

Danny Makes Use of His Ass-ets

Twenty-six Rotarians made their way to The Ridge to find Past President to the 2nd Power George Schoen wearing the medallion of honor.  President Bill Saunders, President Elect Susan Hansen, Assistant District Governor Marc Glass, and Frank Collins had the obligation to attend a President Elect Training Seminar in Enfield.  Bill and Marc made it back in time for dessert.  A little thing called a “real job” kept Susan away. I’m guessing Frank was involved in high level Rotary business.

George put on his Invocation hat and spoke of our congregate belief in diversity and how fortunate we are as a Club to be able to come together in friendship.  The cattle call into the buffet line was the next order of business:  Chinese stir fry noodles, egg rolls, and American cheesecake or chocolate layer cake.

Our caterer has a big favor to ask - - if you are bringing a guest who has dietary restrictions (not just preferences, please) we need to let Pablo know in advance.  This way he does not give away the one or two meals he sets aside for our regular members each week.

Besides our Guest Speaker, Virginia de Lima, our only other guest was Deirdre Tindall of Nutmeg Tech in South Windsor.  Thank you, Larry Hangland, for bringing her to meet us.  It was so very nice to have Art Bradbury in attendance to lead the Welcome Song with the refrain of “oh yeah” by Mo Moshovos.  Dan Larson brought up the rear on that tune.  Speaking of bringing up the rear . . . check out the prank Ned Lynch played on Danny!  Not sure if the Sergeant-at-Arms was in on that or not.

Scholarship Committee Meets Next Week

Sergeant Jack Sayre, filling in for Neal Cunningham, did have the following to report:  many forced donations were received in honor of the Patriots spectacular win of the Super Bowl; tanned (but not necessarily toned) Wes Willett was back from visiting Madre and Padre in Florida; George Agnelli was happy that Eleanor will be returning today from California; Alex Wisz had a nice visit from his daughter who is in the military; Dick McCarthy celebrated a birthday and anniversary; Ceil Collins marked the 98th win of the UConn Women’s Basketball Team; Mary Martin contributed in honor of Happy Jack Martin’s up-coming hernia surgery (insert your joke here); and The Sarge himself let us know of his wife, Jan’s, broken arm that occurred on their trip last week to Vermont.  Send some healing thoughts to Jan at 227 Saddlehill Road in Manchester 06040-6960.

Our own Herb Barall could use our support (no calls please) as he is being shuttled to and from hospital to rehab facility per Nick Cecere.  Drop him a line at 821 Brewer Street, East Hartford 06118.  The Board recently voted to make Herb an Honorary Member.  His health issues are preventing him from attending meetings.

Announcements:  a meeting of the Scholarship Committee has been called by Bob Wood for next Wednesday (the 15th) at 11:30 a.m. at The Ridge.  Dan Larson reports that Lionel Lessard will be honored on Sunday the 12th at the Glastonbury Irish American Club on Commerce Street.

Happy Jack Martin, Raffle Master and General Gadfly, was able to announce a first-time winner today in Jennifer Jones.  Jennifer’s husband had won some bucks (not a lot so take it easy) in a Super Bowl pool and ponied up cash for her lunch and raffle.  Lo and behold Jennifer was able to parlay the windfall into being a Raffle winner!

A Single (and Singular) Resource

Today’s Guest Speaker, Virginia de Lima, presented a very educational program entitled “Water 101:  Science of Water”.  Ms. de Lima is the recently retired Director of the US Geologic Survey Water Science Center located right on Pitkin Street.  Her discussion of “a single resource” took us through how a simple rain drop can become a stream, a river, part of the ocean, and lead to the creation of our drinking water sources.  Her illustration of the importance and fragility of maintaining clean watersheds (everything from home wells to major reservoirs) pointed out how polluters from lawn fertilizers to malfunctioning residential septic tanks can negatively impact our drinking water.

Thank you Program Committee Chair Dan Firestone for another good program.  Next up:  the Manchester Ambulance Service.

OK folks.  Stay safe and warm.  The Ground Hog says less than six weeks to Spring!
