Another small group today. Even with three guests, we were able to occupy only three tables. Must be the dog days of summer. But the highlight of the meeting was an appearance by Jim Fallon. Jim has spent the past few months in Texas battling his health challenges. Great to see him back and on his feet.

Presidential Granddaughters Grace Gathering

President Bob called the meeting to order and we took a shot at the Opening Song – second verse much stronger than the first. After the pledge, Bob Wood offered the invocation while canvasing for more volunteers to deliver this in his place in coming weeks. So, for the record, we are hurting for High Gear writers, for Sergeant at Arms bad guys, and now for Invocation givers. Not great signs, all.

After a tasty lunch of mushroom and cheese ravioli, salad and Ned’s home-made cookie plate, we had the introduction of guests. Gracing our tables were Peyton Buettner from Miami, Florida and Quinn Duval, for right here in town. Both are the granddaughters of our President. Peyton is here for a visit after attending a conference at Georgetown in Washington, D.C. Also slipping in late, thus avoiding an introduction, was old pal, Bob Duggan from Glastonbury.

Mr. Duggan reminded us that we are all invited to attend Glastonbury’s Sea food boil next Monday night at the Glastonbury Elks Club. Cocktails at 6 p.m., dinner around 7 p.m. $22 gets you the feed. Unfortunately, so few of us are planning to attend, President Bob declared there would be a regularly scheduled meeting of the Club next Wednesday at the Ridge.

Volunteers to staff Table Tuesday 5-8 p.m.

Announcements followed. We need volunteers to staff our booth for the EHPD National Night Out next Tuesday, August 6th, from 5 – 8 p.m. at the Public Safety Complex, 31 School Street. Let Bob know if you can help.

East Hartford Rotary has received notice that we will be getting a District Grant for our Coats for Kids program once again.

On August 24th, the District is sponsoring a Polio Plus night out at the Yard Goats game.

We have been invited to a reception at Hueblein Hall at Hartford Hospital to thank us for our participation in meeting the global grant to provide prosthetics for individuals in Peru.

Volunteers are needed for a Habitat for Humanity build in East Hartford on September 7th.

Willett gets Brownie Points

Sergeant at Arms Jack Martin reported a light day with most fines involving welcoming back Jim Fallon, whining about the Red Sox pitching woes, and disrespecting the Sarge. Bob Wood paid for a brand, spanking new car purchase. Jim Watts takes over these duties next week.

Quinn Duval won the raffle, and Diane Willett will be receiving the floral arrangement this week. Should be good for several brownie points.

See you next week at the Ridge on Wednesday.

East Hartford Rotarian Gil Wishart Passes in Florida

We learned shortly after the meeting, that our good friend and proud Rotarian Gil Wishart passed away Wednesday morning in Florida from complications from his recent fall. Gil was once of the most gracious and friendly folks who ever graced our club. Details of final arrangements will follow. Our condolences to his daughter, Kim, and her siblings.
