It was dark and wet, although the storm had passed. Cool too. 65 degrees at six p.m. and headed down from there.  Our annual non-softball game at the Glastonbury Elks Pavilion continued under less than ideal conditions this past Monday.

Meal A Carnivore's Delight

The crowd was pretty good, all things considered, with close to a full house by the time the meal was served (reportedly a little early due to the weather.) The clear majority of the attendees were from the Host Club, but East Hartford Rotary had a representative contingent at the tables.  President Dave’s clever decision to hold a Board Meeting prior to the joint gathering assured us of that result.

The traditional big slab of roast beef was served, along with a salad and baked potato and dessert with the usual Glastonbury Rotary efficiency and bonhomie. Several doggy bags made their way home destined for Tuesday lunches.

Softball Competition A Thing of The Past

After dinner, Glastonbury announced their makeups, recognized the East Hartford contingent as visiting Rotarians sans any welcome song, announced birthdays and wedding anniversaries, much as we do each week. They are a strong and enthusiastic club.

President Dave and Assistant Governor Marc spoke briefly. Dave took the opportunity to thank Glastonbury for their  hospitality and tried to drum up foursomes for the September Golf Tournament.  Marc asked for a moment of silence for RI President Elect Sam Owori, of Gaga, Uganda who passed away July 13th. He then announced that the October 20th Zone Meeting will be held at the Hartford Convention Center. You can sign up on the District 7890 website.

The evening concluded with a raffle which no one from East Hartford won. With that another East Hartford/Glastonbury joint meeting was in the books. Traditional bragging rights over softball victories and the attendant nursing of war wounds was poignantly absent.

Summer Picnic Coming Up August 9th

In other news, the Summer Cookout on August 9th is fast approaching. It will be held at Kevin and Sue Kickery’s house at 38 Bancroft Road, East Hartford. Cocktail hour begins at 5:00 p.m. and dinner will be served around 6:00 p.m.

The Club will provide the meat course and we need members to sign up to bring one of the following: Appetizers, Salads, Side Dishes, Desserts.  Please let Ceil Collins know your choice by email (ceilcollins@aol.com), phone (860-568-8660) or sign up sheet next Wednesday.

That’s it for this week. Thanks to Wes Willett for his meeting notes. See you all at the Ridge next Wednesday.
