World Polio Day, October 24, 2018

Marc Glass did a great job impersonating President Kevin today.

Rang the bell on time and headed right into R-O-T-A-R-Y, which was sung with gusto, followed by the pledge.  George Schoen delivered a thoughtful invocation reminding us of our responsibilities to our community, our country and in fact all countries.

A Little Bit of Everything

Lunch today was in the words of our server “a little bit of everything.”  Offerings included beef in a sweet beef sauce and chicken Florentine, accompanied by white rice.  Additionally, there was broccoli quiche, Caesar salad and rolls.  Dessert was the now familiar LARGE cookies.  Comments at my table were from Jairo “It’s delicious,” Nick “They’re improving,” and Peter “I think there’s also bacon in this quiche.”

There were no guests today, so we saved our voices for a rousing Happy Birthday sung to Marc Glass who will be celebrating his 61st birthday this coming Monday.

Caring moments:  Bob Wood was with us and reported that Debbie is the happy recipient of a pacemaker which should improve her quality of life.  George Sr (Agnelli) is still in the hospital but soon will be moving to Manchester Manor.  He will welcome calls and visits. To check on timing, you can contact George Jr., email is Agnellidad@aol.com.

Fireside Chats Coming Soon

Marc shared several announcements and reminders:

President Kevin received a very nice letter from Jo-Ann Dorn, Program Supervisor for the town’s Social Services Department, thanking the club and especially Dick McCarthy and Jack Sayers, their spouses, and Anwar Hossain, all of whom helped supervise the Coats for Kids day October 14th.  103 needy East Hartford children received a new arm winter coat at Burlington Coat Factory that morning.  In the words of Ms. Dorn, “this program is truly a “Rotary family project.’”

November 1st is the district Foundation Dinner.  Speaker will be a Dunn Scholar.

November 27th is Rotary Day at Theater Works in Hartford.  Tickets are $25, with $11 of that going to The Rotary Foundation.  Check with Marc or President Kevin for details is you are interested in attending.

Reminder that Fireside Chats are scheduled for early November, the 5th and the 8th.  There are still spaces at Steve Jacoby’s home on November 8th.  Nick’s home will not be available, since he suspects folks do not want to drive all the way to Farmington.

Club’s board will meet this Monday at the home of President Kevin at the usual time.

Jim Watts reminded us that his Paul Harris Nominating Committee will meet Wednesday, October 31st at the Ridge at 11:15, prior to the regular club meeting.  Jim said he welcomes nominations anytime up to the day before the meeting.

The Sox Are On a Roll

George Schoen’s Sergeant-at-Arms report began with mentioning Marc Glass’s birthday and Marc’s also contributing since the Eagles remain Super Bowl Champs.

Numerous folks contributed to celebrate the Red Sox successes, including Ned Lynch who apparently has figured out how to be heard when he cannot attend a meeting.

Several folks paid to leave early, but there was no program today; so, everyone was on their way before 1 PM.

Raffle winner today:  Jim Watts.
