Mother nature sure supplied us with an encore presentation of last week's hot and humid day with temperatures in the 90's!  The Ridge, however, maintained its cool to the delight of what appeared to be a sparse group of Rotarians.

 

The Golf Committee was again hard at work planning for the big event.  We are now up to about 108 golfers which is good, but we still need raffle items and sponsors, so beat the bushes and try to acquire either or both! We're at 12 days and counting, so let's give a big cheer to the committee.

 

President Mark rang the bell, led the Pledge, and called upon Dan Firestone for the Invocation.  Dan wished us a happy new year in advance, and asked us to love all that is good and beautiful, and have the Almighty guide the nations of the world to reach out in love and peace.  Our weekly buffet consisted of, again rice, but a new vegetable-summer squash and zucchini, with a teriyaki chicken breast and the usual salad.  Carrot cake completed the meal!

 

President Mark reconvened us, had the introduction of guests, and selected Neal Cunningham and Bob Buettner to lead the Welcome Song, in a more accomplished version than that encountered last week.  Sgt. at Arms Dan Firestone, acting in a dual capacity, announced that Mo Moshovos felt slighted that his birthday of several weeks ago was not given proper respect by then Sgt. at Arms Nick Cecere, and requested he be properly sung to.  Next, the Empress, Mary Martin, paid for her birthday with a request not to be sung to, but that request, not being honored, had to put up with a serenade anyway.  Herb Barall paid for his and Reggie's 63 wedding anniversary.  And Finally, Mark Glass paid a fine as a way of thanking Dan Larson for helping him out. 

 

In the interest of announcements, Sue Klock mentioned that Razia Jan, builder of a school for girls in Afganistan along with Beth Murphy will be at the Manchester Country Club on Tuesday, November 8th from 6-8 PM.  All are encouraged to attend.  Neal Cunningham again announced the Greater Hartford Marathon is to be run on October 10th.  Save the day - more information to follow.  Our September 30th meeting will be at the newly renovated Raymond Library, and the Foundation Dinner will be November 5th at Chez Joseph.

 

Mary Martin, pinch hitting for Doug Willett, passed around Fireside Chat host and leader sign-up sheets.  Still needed are host sites, so please call Mary if you can host.  The Chats will take place the first two weeks of October.  If you have any suggestions for discussion topics contact the Board, Mary or Doug.  These chats are a vital part of our Club's life, so pitich-in  and become involved.

 

Susan Hansen volunteered to do today's program and used her time to acquaint us with the myriad of information contained on our Club's Web site.  She took us through the steps to enter the site and use the information which is contained therein.  She has done a great job in upgrading our site to meet Rotary International's standards.  She has created a user friendly Home Page with convenient drop down menu items.  If you need a roster it's easy to find; a club document - it's there; a committee assignment, easy: next week's program - look to the left, it is there.  My advice, go to the web page, -East Hartford Rotary. org, and play with the site and see what's there for you. You'll be amazed.  There is no substitute for a hands on experience.  If you are having difficulty, find a 10 year old, and he/she will help you out.  Great job, Susan, on the presentation as well as for your time and talent in setting up our Club Runner site.

 

Make ups - Frank and Ceil Collins aboard a Princess Cruise ship on its way to Alaska, and Steve Jacoby at a RLI conference.  It's nice to see make ups - turn them in!  AND the winner of Happy Jack's raffle - Bob Wood.

 

 

 

To finish on a sad note, the entire Club extends its condolences to Rotarian Herb Tischofer and his family on the loss of his wife and our good friend, Julie Tischofer, last week. Julie was always a delight to see at a club function and served her family and the East Hartford community with love and distinction for many, many years.
