Finally a sunny day, which has been in short supply since I came back from my vacation and was greeted by three epic snow storms. We still have five weeks of winter left. So stop complaining and write this High Gear. Acting President Elect, Marc, was acting as the fill in for President Mary who was going to be away but felt compelled to come back to keep an eye on Marc. Just kidding.
The bell, the Rotary Song and the Pledge of Allegiance did not sound any different just because Marc was in charge. Bob Wood gave a solemn and thoughtful invocation. Today was another buffet lunch consisting of rice, chicken stew, mixed veggies, roll and salad followed by strawberry shortcake topped with whipped cream.
Michael Sherber from the Avon Club was our only guest besides the guest speaker, more about her later. Acting President Elect Marc, acting on his good impulse, asked Happy Jack Martin and Bill Saunders to act and sing the Welcome Song. Acting was good, but Neal complained later that he has never heard the Song so out of tune and felt obligated to pay a fine for saying so.
Sergeant-at-Arms Report by Neal was rather lengthy and included Steve Jacoby’s and Frank Collins’s birthdays (yes, Steve actually came early today), Happy Jack paying again for disrespecting our esteemed Neal Cunningham, TedMosebach declaring Susan Hansen as the Technology Queen, Betty Russell and Dan Larsonfor their pictures in the paper, Bill paying for Bob Wood winning the chili cooking contest, Art for the arrival of his 14th great grandchild (sorry Art for reporting this incorrectly in last week’s HG), RuthSheehan being glad to be back, GilWishart happy about UConn Women winning, early leavers and one late comer.
Bill reported that Doug Willett is doing well after his heart surgery. He appreciated all calls and cards from fellow Rotarians and TLC from Diane, his better half.
Peter announced that MCC, as part of the Lecture Series, will have the next one on 2/17/2015, 4-6 PM in Room A-142. Peter attended the last one and was impressed by the presentation. Bob Wood won the weekly Raffle. I think Bob should pay a fine next week for delivering the invocation, winning the cooking contest and the Raffle. Did I miss anything that Bob might have done this week?
Dan introduced our Guest Speaker, Christine Randazzo, an engineer by background turned landscape designer. She has her own firm now after working in Manchester, East Hartford and DOT. Plants are her passion. Her love for nature was evident in many completed landscaping projects that she shared with us. On a cold snowy winter day the slides of colorful foliage warmed our hearts and deepened the longing for spring.
