Humanitarian Work in Belarus
Nov. 02, 2022
Doug Brendel is a popular speaker, writer, and actor, but his heart beats for humanitarian work in the former Soviet Union. For more than 20 years, he and his wife have led NewThing.net, the largest continuous humanitarian-aid distribution operation in Belarus. Since the beginning of the Ukraine conflict, with the people of Belarus caught in the middle between Russia and Ukraine, the dynamics of Doug’s work have zigzagged dramatically — and the opportunity for Americans to help people in need has shifted in surprising ways. Doug will share insights, stories, and images from the former Soviet Union — and we’ll enjoy a freewheeling Q&A after his brief talk. Doug is also an award-winning humor writer — and he says he’ll be bringing an amusing free gift for each individual who attends in person. So this promises to be a lively experience! |

Forestry & Climate
Jan. 11, 2023
As a native of Putnam, Connecticut, where some of my family’s forest land has been conserved, I have been involved in landowner outreach to woodland owners regarding their options for conservation and sustainable forest management – and in recent years NEFF has been focusing increasingly on the importance of understanding how a changing climate will impact our forest resources and the health of our trees. Many conservation and forestry organizations are now working to identify best practices for natural resource managers and foresters to use in caring for the land for society’s multiple objectives (wildlife habitat, recreation, wood products, and nature’s benefits and services that provide us with clean air and water). I have also served recently on the CT Governor’s Climate Change Council working groups on forests and climate-smart agriculture and forestry. |
