“Vegetables are a must on a diet. I suggest carrot cake, zucchini bread and pumpkin pie.”

Today was a beautiful late August day at the Ridge with an enthusiastic and fulsome crowd of Rotarians in attendance. Our good buddy and dearly missed former East Hartford Rotarian, Susan Hansen, graced us with her presence today and presented President Dave with a flag from her new Rotary association, the on-line E-Club. Great to see her continuing her Rotary involvement and commitment to the cause.

My Kingdom for a Carrot Cake

Lunch today had a slight Spanish flavor with rice and black beans, spicy chicken slices, the usual mixed veggies and salad. The highlight of the meal was our favorite dessert, carrot cake. So delicious was this item that our photographer caught The Empress absconding with not one but two pieces while the crowd was at the buffet, and Dan Larson later took the whole serving plate to his table.

Susan was our only guest and we provided her with a rousing rendition of our welcome song, something she was actually looking forward to as her came into the meeting. Not sure how she felt once she heard it.

Jim Watts did the Sergeant at Arms duties for the last time today and experienced a slow week. Ruthie Sheehan paid for a grandson starting his college career at UConn this week, Bob Buettner paid to announce a Social Event on Friday, September 22. Those so inclined will be gathering at the Eastside Restaurant in New Britain for some genuine German style menu options. Let Bob or Ceil know if you plan to attend. Alex Wisz paid because it was a beautiful day, Kevin Kickery paid to celebrate a son buying a new house and a granddaughter starting first grade, Ned Lynch contributed for his league leading Red Sox and for a snide dig at the Yankees chances of even making the playoffs, Steve Jacoby paid for his usual offense, and, finally, Dan Larson and Marc Glass are happy that UConn Football is opening Thursday night.

Wine and Cheese Next Week
President Dave proposed two dates for a Club Project with Habitat for Humanity, Saturday, November 4 and Saturday, November 11. At least 12 Rotary volunteers are needed for each date. The November 4th date was greeted enthusiastically but the November 11th date was a non-starter. The Prez will seek another option.

President Dave also announced that in Jay Stewart’s honor, we will be having a wine and cheese event prior to next week’s meeting. Come early and lift a glass to a truly amazing and well played life. Jay’s obituary is in Thursday’s Courant and calling hours will be from 3-7p.m. on Thursday, September 7 with a memorial service at South Congregational Church at 10:30 a.m. on September 9th.

Dan Larson announced that the September 20 meeting will be at the Goodwin College Community Room and will be catered by Maneelys. Sign up next week with Ceil Collins.

The Board has formed a new Lunch Committee consisting of Jack Sayre and Wes Willett. Any suggestions or complaints about the lunch are to go to them. Please do not go directly to Eric in the kitchen. He is only the server. He is not the chef and is not the one making menu decisions. Last week we had several members complaining directly to Eric and this is inappropriate. Jack and Wes will be our liaisons to the caterer and will be tasked with developing new menus, and handling complaints in a courteous and professional manner.

President Dave reminded us that as of the end of August we remain without a President Elect. Please give this some consideration.

Members are encouraged to consider Shelter Box when contemplating Hurricane Harvey donations.

And finally, Tavern on the Green at the East Hartford Golf Club will be holding a Lobster Bake on September 8th. Price is $35 and at least one East Hartford Rotary table will be set up. Prior Reservations are required.

Someone won the raffle today but I wasn’t paying attention.

With no program, and nothing further to discuss, the meeting was dismissed shortly after 1 p.m. That completes my two-month stint as High Gear writer and it’s time to pass the baton to Anwar Hossain for the month of September.

Yours in Rotary and pass the last piece of carrot cake,

Doug Willett
