Dear Ruthie,
Please accept my apology for not coming in to listen to your Invocation.  I was still playing at being Ebenezer Scrooge at the Treasurer’s desk and missed it.  But knowing you as I do, I will say that it was a sincere and heartwarming statement of goodwill toward all.
              Love Always,
              Mary (Empress of the World)

This substitute Scribe got her act together eventually and has constructed the following record from President Bill’s notes after finishing her meatloaf and slice of carrot cake.
Gil Making Friends in Florida
Our only guest, three-peat Dana Olmsted, went out to her car “to get something” just before Art Bradbury and George Schoen led us in the Welcome Song.  My guess is that word has gotten around that visitors should save themselves from our howling.  Dana’s timing was off and she re-entered before the last notes were sung.

George Schoen, back up this time as Sergeant-at-Arms, had a short but meaningful list of fines and payments:  Ned Lynch – happy the World Baseball Classic has ended and we can get down to “real” baseball; George S and Ruth – happy to see the Lady Huskies in the Sweet Sixteen; Sue and Peter Klock – enjoyed their stay in Miami, extended thanks to the impact on travel of Storm Eugene; Dan Larson – celebrated his 20th anniversary as a member of our Club (to which announcement Jack Sayre said how surprised he was that Danny had not been thrown out by now); and a Happy Birthday song was sung to Larry Hangland (who missed his chance last week due to above stated storm cancellation of our meeting).

There were reports on the health and well-being of some members:  Bob Wood had been in Florida and had a nice visit with Gil Wishart.  He reports that Gil seems very popular with his new neighbors.  Ceil Collins and Art Bradbury had up-to-the-minute-news for us that Jay Stewart should be heading home after her illness any moment now, if not already.  Jack Sayre had spoken to John Horn’s wife, Mary Ann.  She reports that John is having heart surgery next week to replace the pig valves that have turned into old bacon in his chest.  You can send a card to John Horn at 9 Olivia Lane, Old Lyme, CT  06371.  And Nick Cecere says that Herb Barall is up for having visitors at the Glastonbury Health Center at 1175 Hebron Avenue.

No Noon Meeting Next Week
There’s a chance our own Marc Glass may joined the esteemed ranks of East Hartford Rotarians who went on to serve as District Governor (Messrs. Miller, Speigel, Stewart, Collins, Sheehan, and Ms. Sue Klock).  He has submitted an application for consideration.  Stay tuned for an announcement in the Fall.

Our Interact Club (Rotary for high schoolers) at CIBA (CT International Baccalaureate Academy) will be well represented with seven attendees at the April 1st Interact Conference.

Peter and Sue Klock will represent our Club as “credentialed candidates” at the District Conference.  That means they will vote on our behalf regarding District legislation.  By the way, Sue Klock will soon be calling a meeting of members interested in being on the Rotary Foundation Committee in our Club.  Foundation is the “giving” arm of Rotary that does good deeds.   Please think about becoming a committee member and let her know.

Speaking of conferences, Bill Gates has been confirmed as a speaker at the Rotary International Convention in Atlanta in June.

Thanks go out to Dan Firestone for getting our Duck Race tax info in for 2016.  President Bill doesn’t look so good in an orange jumpsuit.

Dan also let us know that we have openings for 8 folks to join us on the Mystery Ride to ? ? ?

If you are planning on attending next Wednesday evening’s Paul Harris Banquet at The Gallery, now is the time to give Ceil Collins your money ($50 per person) and meal choices.  After Friday the 24th you will be charged if you signed up but did not attend.  There will be no Noon meeting on Wednesday the 29th.

Anybody interested in hearing Binod Khaitan speak of the Eye Clinic in India we hope to support with a Global Grant?  He will be at the West Hartford Rotary Club’s meeting on Monday, April 10, at Noon at the Pond House Restaurant inside Elizabeth Park.  Please let President Bill know if you are can represent us.

The East Hartford Middle School at 777 Burnside Avenue is holding its Career Day on Tuesday, April 25 from 7:30 to 10:00 a.m..  Anwar Hossain will be a speaker and we are all invited to attend the opening ceremony.

We supported the East Hartford Youth Football and Cheerleading Organization with a $750 grant this year from our Charitable Fund so Ned Lynch presented us with a beautiful plaque-mounted photo expressing their appreciation.

Raffle Master Happy Jack was the winner of the weekly raffle last week.  Of course Mrs. Martin put that into the family coffers for safe keeping.  This week Dan Firestone was the winner.  Mrs. Firestone said he could have it.
A Little Song and Dance - Herb Would Love It
We were without an official Program this week but Marc Glass and President Elect Dave Amberg did a little song-and-dance for us on the President Elect Training Seminar (PETS) that they just attended.  Marc let us know that next year’s official Rotary theme is “Rotary Makes a Difference”.  Dave  learned that our Club is at the top of the heap when it comes to ‘doing so much so well’.  He will be concentrating on finding a “hands on” project for us to work on in his year.

Remember:  No Noon Meeting at VMC on March 29.  Paul Harris Banquet instead!
Peace,
Empress of the World (Mary Martin)
