Back in the 1991-92 Rotary year, I remember writing a High Gear along the lines of “Jimmy, Jimmy, how could you? How could you ring the bell to start the weekly meeting without adorning yourself with the medallion of office?”  That absent minded miscreant back in the day was our beloved Past President and Past District Governor, the late Jim Sheehan.

Fast forward twenty-five years and it happened again today. Newly minted President Dave Amberg rang the bell, led us in the opening song and the pledge, and even introduced Art…ah…Bill Saunders to provide the invocation, all the while sans medallion.  Out of the corner of my eye, this scribe caught him sneaking over to his briefcase, removing the prized badge of office and placing it belatedly around his neck while Bill was speaking.

My heart beat faster as I recognized the opportunity to “out” the new Prez and demand the appropriate penalty be administered. But before I could, as soon as he regained the microphone, the Prez himself fessed up to his offence and posited that he owed the club a wine and cheese party before an upcoming meeting. How disappointing for me, but what a clear credit to the honesty and integrity of our new President. Let’s hope the wine he serves is equal to the top shelf libations provided by Jimmy so many years ago.

Empress Gets Honored For Skills

So, with this somewhat shaky start, we made our way to the buffet table to load our plates with baked chicken, rice, string beans and salad. Massive chocolate chip and peanut butter cookies awaited in the main room.

Lots of discussion about golf today at our table, along with an intriguing tale told by someone who will be unnamed concerning a certain Empress once being honored for her project management skills with a plague mounted on the door inside a stall in the ladies bathroom. The story only wetted our Taste Buds for more disclosure.

Bob Buettner introduced his guest, granddaughter Quinn Duggan who will be a sixth-grader in upcoming school year. Also introduced was Amy Bryant, Family and Community Liaison with the School System, who will be sharing the System’s “Corporate” membership with Vince Crawford. We look forward to getting to know her better. The Bobbsey Twins, Mo Moshovos and Nick Cecere led the Welcome Song.

Bill Works on Swing

President Dave introduced a Board approved hands-on project for our consideration. Habitat for Humanity will be building two residences in East Hartford beginning this November.  We need at least twelve volunteers to support these builds with an East Hartford Rotary Dedicated Day at each. There is a $50 per volunteer fee involved which the Board has voted to assume. A show of hands of those interested demonstrated Club support.  Dave will follow up.

Jim Watts is our  Sergeant at Arms this month and he struggled to keep the banner of this office secured around his somewhat inadequate left bicep. But the man does know how to empty pockets. George Agnelli paid to celebrate 53 years of wedded bliss although he claims this was true for only 52 years and 360 days of the marriage. With Saint Eleanor being a relative,  I for one refuse to believe all 53 years haven’t been happier than George deserves.  Ceil Collins paid for a birthday and spared us any warbling.

George Schoen paid because he believes whoever is in first place in the American League East on August 2 is automatically guaranteed to win the world series in October. And he whistles as he passes the graveyards filled with the bones of disappointed Beantown rooters. Bob Buettner paid in recognition of his pride in Miss Quinn.

And finally, Bill Saunders related what has to be the most convoluted golf story ever told in our hallowed halls. Seems he was playing with Marc Glass at Top Stone last week when he was practicing his swing on the 17th tee. Unfortunately, the club slipped from his hand, flew through the air, and landed midway up a tree behind him. Various attempts to dislodge the club with other clubs and tossed objects were unsuccessful and soon, the next foursome was at the tee and looking on with wonder and glee.

Gentleman Bill suggested they play through but the group which included Town Fire Marshal Tom Spiller was enjoying their predicament too much to do that.  Bill asked if anyone had a ball retriever which would allow him to extend the handle and possibly reach his runaway Club. Someone did, but even this was unequal to the task.

Finally, young Spiller grabbed the retriever, stood precariously on the framing of the golf cart, reached out and disturbed the club’s slumber. As the club hurtled to the turf, it’s rapid movement startled Marc and with his cat-like reflexes, he jumped back, overturned a garbage can and landed on his posterior surrounded by an aromatic bed of empty beer cans. Spiller’s group insisted on following our heroes to the 18th green, hoping additional mayhem might occur.  Suffice it to say, Bill paid our kitty handsomely.

The Indomitable Mrs. Stewart
Ceil Collins related that Vince Crawford, Amy Bryant from the school system and Lauren Floyd from the YMCA have completed Rotary Information and are thus eligible for upcoming induction to our membership.
The Empress, Mary Martin, provided us with a spreadsheet outlining our annual dues structure and an explanation of how these monies are expended. Out of a total member annual expense of $230, $79.34 goes to Rotary International and $39.00 goes to the District. The remaining $125.09 funds all our non-charitable expenses. No increase in our annual dues are anticipated.

Ceil and Bob Buettner put out the final call for next Wednesday evening’ picnic at the Kickerys. Ceil needs your commitment by Friday, August 4th and Bob needs strong backs to help transport tables and chairs next Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Ridge. Those without back problems are asked to pitch in to return said tables and chairs Wednesday night after the picnic. No Noon Meeting Next Wednesday.

Upcoming Committee meetings include two on August 16th – the Golf Committee and the Program Committee will both be meeting around 11:15 on that date. Sue and Peter Klock have once again made a significant sponsorship commitment to the Golf Tournament. The Committee is seeking additional sponsors, raffle prizes and golfers. As usual we are procrastinating with our commitments and our committee members are getting a little anxious.  Let’s relieve their stress.

Which brings us to our Caring Moment and a somber reminder of life’s realities. Art Bradbury informed us that our dear friend and exemplary Rotarian, Jay Stewart, is now receiving palliative care at the hospice at Manchester Manor. On the cusp of her 93rd birthday in November, Jay is experiencing an overall decline in her health but her spirits remain as indomitable as ever. Visitors and callers are welcome. Manchester Manor is at 385 W. Center Street in Manchester (860-646-0129) and Jay’s direct number is 860-568-0044. Please keep Jay in your thoughts and prayers.

Until next Wednesday evening at the estate of Kevin and Sue Kickery (38 Bancroft Road, East Hartford, 860-944-6365, Libations at 5 p.m, Dinner at 6 p.m.), I remain your most humble scribe,
